AC motor or DC motor
AC motor or DC motor ?
The driver motor is one the most important part in recorder player, it drive the flatter in correct and accuracy speed. Generally, there are 2 types of motor, AC motor and DC motor, so what is advantage and disadvantage of these drive method.
The driver motor is one the most important part in recorder player, it drive the flatter in correct and accuracy speed. Generally, there are 2 types of motor, AC motor and DC motor, so what is advantage and disadvantage of these drive method.
1. AC motor
AC motor speed to depend on the cycle of voltage electric, generally it is 50Hz or 60Hz, so you have to prepare 50Hz pulley if you are staying in 50Hz area, and vice-versa.
Because the turning speed of motor belongs to electric cycle so you can not adjust the turning speed by changing power supply. There is a way to adjust turning speed of motor which is using a iron plate and a magnet to control the turning. This method is used to adopt in Garrard or Thorens turntable. One another method which is much more expensive is make a schematic that change the cycle of electric to control the turning speed.
But in opposite side, AC motor very stabilize, its speed is almost not change because the cycle of electric is almost fixed all time. AC motor is also very powerful, so if you use a heavy flatter, then AC motor can drive it better than DC motor. AC motor can reach stabilize status after a few seconds while a DC motor will take much more time.
Generally an AC motor brings a more analog sound than DC motor, but it is not much.
2. DC motor
An DC motor is motor using DC voltage electric to drive, it does not need much of electric, and the turning speed of motor belongs to electric power supply so it is very easily to adjust speed of motor. But the DC voltage is very easily to be changed after time of using so it is neccesary to design a lock schematic to lock the speed.
All the advantage of AC motor is disadvantage of DC motor and vice-versa. The DC motor is easily to handle but the drive power and stabilization is not as good as AC motor so due to the purpose of using, you can choose the DC motor or AC motor. If you are using a heavy flatter, I think a good AC motor is good in this case, if you are worry about accuracy of speed, you can order an AC motor that speed can be adjusted turning speed. If your turntable flatter is just an aluminium flatter with light weight then DC motor is better in this case.
