[ Review from Analog Magazine ]OTOMON LAB Soverign preamp with O.F.A.T 48 steps finemet attenuator transformer, input, output balanced
Technical data is just an improve that item was tested carefully before sending to customer. While our products consistently achieve good to excellent technical figures compared to commercial alternatives, those numbers serve only to confirm that the design contains no engineering errors.
We could, in most cases, apply active techniques to make the specifications look even more impressive — but if doing so strips away originality or musical character, we will not do it. Our aim is to build equipment that sounds beautiful, not equipment that measures beautifully.
At OTOMON, music is judged by the ear and no instrument can replicate the human 's ear.

A Vacuum-Tube Preamplifier That Lets You Truly Feel the Refinement of True High-End Audio

From Otomon — a handmade vacuum-tube amplifier maker based in Kanagawa Prefecture — comes a tube preamplifier with a separate power-supply chassis. This unit is a sincerely crafted product designed to pair with the 300B single-ended amplifier "HIBIKI 300" introduced in the previous issue, though of course it also works with other power amplifiers. The power-supply section employs the 300B and E88CC to keep the plate voltage constant, suppressing noise and distortion. For volume control, a 48-step transformer-type attenuator using a finemet core delivers exceptionally transparent sound quality.

The Soverign is a separate-chassis vacuum-tube preamplifier that embodies Otomon Lab's distinctive design philosophy, blending a fine, time-honored classic configuration with the latest thinking. Otomon Lab has a particularly strong commitment to directly-heated tubes; its own power amplifiers tend to use them, and the maker creates tube amps of singular appeal by combining tubes in ways that draw out each one's individual character.
In pursuit of how best to bring out the personality each tube holds, Otomon Lab developed the patent-pending O.U.D.D.C (Otomon Ultimate Direct-heat tube Drive Circuit), inserted between the driver stage and the output stage. Having introduced this circuit into monaural flagships such as The Royal 300 and King & Que[en], the maker has been carving out a new ideal form for the vacuum-tube amplifier. The Soverign is what resulted when this same design philosophy was brought into a preamplifier, with the power supply separated into its own chassis.
The Soverign was developed under the theme of fidelity to the original sound. It adopts transformer-coupled signal transmission — strong against external noise — at both the input and output stages. A carefully selected 12AY7 is assigned one tube per stage, and a finemet core placed between the two stages generates 15 dB of gain. A 48-step transformer-type attenuator volume control allows the music's dynamics to be drawn out fully while preserving signal purity at any listening level. NFB is also applied from the output stage back to the input stage to enhance the stability of the frequency response.
Most distinctive of all is the separately housed power supply. To guarantee stable operation under any conditions, it carries an original voltage-regulation circuit using the 300B and E88CC, holding the plate voltage of the audio-amplifying 12AY7 perfectly constant. Rectification uses a GZ34 (5AR4); the 12AY7 heaters are DC-powered, suppressing the generation of unwanted noise and distortion in the music signal.
Inputs comprise one RCA unbalanced and three XLR balanced; the output provides one XLR balanced line. Transformers and chokes are supplied by ISO. Each chassis carries a walnut wood panel on the front, while the top panel uses a thick copper plate chosen partly for its tonal contribution, lending the units a calm, high-class presence.
Listening impressions. For the audition I paired the unit with the Hibiki 300 and B&W 802 D4 speakers. It draws out a sense of purity exceptionally well. The honest, transparent quality unique to directly-heated tubes yields highly lucid sound, with high-resolution imaging and a clear, fresh, well-defined soundstage. The directly-heated output stage of the power amplifier renders a seamless, bright stage with excellent see-through depth. Vocals carry just the right amount of body, sounding natural and moist, composed, with crisp articulation around the mouth and well-extended, beautifully colored tone. The resonance of the piano is dense, taking on a refreshing shimmer toward the highs. The spatiality of classical music is portrayed on a grand scale; orchestral instruments have a humid, natural texture with sheen, and harmonies are richly dense yet smoothly rendered. With rock material, the fat kick drum is drawn with energy, and the elastic attack of the bass is reproduced powerfully.
The S/N ratio is also excellent, with a crystalline, pristine soundstage. The range feels broad, the vocal band fresh and vivid; the energy of the imaging, the essential prominence and crispness, the refreshing decay, and the tonal gradation all stand out. The frequency range is wide, contours are natural rather than harsh, and combined with the fine extension of overtone reproduction, it is a sound in which you sense the high degree of refinement worthy of true high-end audio — its depiction of fine detail is masterful.
This refined rendering of texture transcends the constraints of the amplifying device — tube or semiconductor — and the boundaries of any particular topology, delivering a sound that makes you feel the completeness of genuine high-end audio. The Soverign is a preamplifier brimming with a bewitching richness that one would want to pair not only with Otomon Lab's own amps or other tube designs, but with modern solid-state amplifiers as well.
Block Diagram caption (Soverign Block Diagram) The control section is shown on the left of the photo, fitted with one RCA unbalanced and three XLR balanced inputs; the output offers one XLR balanced line. The power-supply section is on the right, connected via a dedicated cable. The left-hand control section houses the 48-step transformer-type attenuator. Throughout, the wiring follows Otomon's insistence on the shortest, most waste-free signal paths.

"What I prioritized above all in designing this unit was fidelity to the original sound. To secure stable operation under any conditions, it incorporates an original voltage-regulation circuit that uses the 300B and E88CC lavishly. By holding the plate voltage of the vacuum tubes perfectly constant, we have thoroughly eliminated any unwanted noise or distortion from contaminating the music signal. Transformer-coupled signal transmission at the input and output stages not only provides excellent immunity to external noise, but also makes it possible to pass the signal on to the next stage without losing the three-dimensionality of the music. Because it supports both balanced and unbalanced connections, it can be used across a wide range of environments, from professional equipment to home audio.
For volume control we use a transformer-type attenuator employing a top-grade finemet core. Its 48-step precision attenuation maintains signal purity at any listening level and brings out the full dynamics of the music — offering transparent sound quality clearly distinct from a conventional resistor-based volume control.
The amplification stage uses a carefully selected 12AY7; combined with an optimized circuit design, it delivers an extremely low-noise, low-distortion signal to the power amplifier. Its 15 dB of gain reliably drives any power amplifier and maximizes the expressive potential of the music. Through a design that makes no compromise down to the finest detail, we realize a musical experience that resonates deeply in the listener's heart."
